Accommodation
Dinner Plain is a fairytale village set amongst the snow gums high in the mountainous Victorian High Country. Teams usually camp during Australian events but the infrastructure available at Dinner Plain will allow partners and families to attend the event in comfort. Not having to fend for yourselves makes it a real holiday. There are no camping facilities.
There is a wide variety of accommodation available at Dinner Plain and we have organised through the bookings services to provide accommodation starting from around $60 per night. Accommodation is either motel style, units or there are houses with many beds which some competitors may wish to share. This is probably the better option for most.
Fuel
Competitors need a fuel range of 300kms for normal dirt road driving (100kph). A standard tank for supporters will suffice. We will organise fuel stops at Omeo and Swifts Creek during the competition.
Fuel costs vary, allow $1 per litre.
Food
There are cafes, restaurants and a pub in Dinner Plain and nearby Mt Hotham. There is also a general store for supplies or you can bring your own food and cook in your own accommodation if a kitchen is included.
You will need to bring your own food and drinks with you each day for lunch etc.
Communications
We use UHF radios which are 477mhz radios and mobile telephones on the CDMA network work well in the competition area. Our communications sponsor can hire out UHF radios. Mobile telephone service on the GSM system will only be available in main cities such as Melbourne, for some of the journey up to Dinner Plain and in the township of Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham, but not in the competition areas. CDMA coverage may be in competition areas.

Weather
Dinner Plain is located at an altitude of 1520 meters.Whilst the average daily summer temperatures are between 15 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, the winter months when the Alpine 4x4 Challenge is held will see cold conditions, and hopefully snow. Daytime temperatures will average between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius, the nights may be below zero.
Due to our altitude the weather conditions can change within a very short period of time, so you should always carry a jumper and a waterproof jacket just in case.
Extended Touring
Dinner Plain adjoins Victoria's Alpine National Park, which comprises some 646,000 hectares of alpine peaks and forests. The Park was declared in 1989 and embraces major ski resorts such as Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. The alpine High Country was explored in the 1840s and, after the decline of goldmining in 1923, developed a pastoral industry. Alpine National Park and High Country remain extremely popular tourist destinations. If you wish to extend your time in Alps, the Dinner Plain Information Centre can also assist in exciting places you can visit in your four wheel drive after the event.
