What is the Alpine 4x4 Challenge?
- Unlike our other event, the Outback 4x4 Challenge, this is a team based 4wd skills event, with two vehicles per team, two people in each car maximum.
- The Alpine 4x4 Challenge takes in the rugged but spectacular mountainous terrain of the Victorian High Country and is run on private property.
- The Alpine 4X4 Challenge is very different from the Outback 4x4 Challenge and support crews are allowed.
- The event is run under the rules and regulations of the Cross Country Drivers Association.
- All participants (competitors and support crews) must be a member of the Cross Country Drivers Association. Membership can be obtained through their website http://ccda.4wd.org.au
- Public liability insurance has already been procured through the Cross Country Drivers Association.
- Videos and DVDs are produced on each event and are available, along with merchandise from ARB and Procomp stores or Australian 4wd Events.
When is the event?
- Event Dates - 3rd – 6th September, 2004
- Participants will arrive at Dinner Plain on Friday 3rd September
- Here they will have their vehicles checked for class classification and event worthiness from Noon until 10pm.
- An official welcome and briefing will take place within this time
- The action starts on Saturday 4th with a motorkhana which will be open for the general public
- On Saturday afternoon teams will be flagged off and head to private property for the real tough four wheel drive stages each day.
- Special stages continue from Saturday through to Monday morning after which there will be a presentation of the prizes and trophies at Dinner Plain.
Why Dinner Plain?
- We have chosen the Alpine village of Dinner Plain so we can offer a unique experience on the 4wd competition calendar.
- It is also a fairytale village set amongst the snow gums high in the mountainous Victorian High Country, surrounded by pristine National Parks with plenty of four wheel drive country too in the Summer months.
- Teams usually camp during Australian events but the infrastructure available at Dinner Plain will allow partners and families to attend the event in comfort. Not having to fend for yourselves makes it a real holiday.
- There are no camping facilities.
- We hope that families will attend the Alpine 4x4 Challenge. They can stay at the village skiing (if there is snow) or just socialising whilst competitors battle it out in the mud on the competition days.
- The actual competition is in two parts
- Motorkhana - a short tight course of obstacles which allows the general public viewing of the event
- Special Stages - there will be six special stages
Why are there Support Crews?
- The shorter event does not allow for us to have the support system we have in place for the Outback 4x4 Challenge where we source parts etc. Therefore the most effective way to run the event is to allow for self support from the teams themselves.
- There are often many four wheel drivers who want to come along and be part of the action, but not as a competitor, maybe behind the scenes as a marshal, or by supporting their loved ones and friends.
- This event allows people to come along as support both emotionally and the vehicular type, for the whole duration of the event.
- Support crews will be assigned special passes and stickers for the vehicles.
- They will see all the action.
- They are however not be allowed on any navigation style stages.
- They can share accommodation with the competitors and work on their cars all night (if that's what they want to do)
- They can socialise with competitors as can the families
- It is not at all like the Outback 4x4 Challenge
Where do we stay?
- There is a wide variety of accommodation available at Dinner Plain.
- We have organised through the bookings services to provide accommodation starting from around $60 per night.
- Accommodation is either motel style, units or there are houses with many beds which some competitors may wish to share. This is probably the better option for most.
- Bookings can be made through the agencies listed below;
- Most accommodation places will not have garages, if you want a garage to house your vehicle you will need to ask specifically.
- Please remember that if you have certain requirements be they economics or otherwise its best you book your accommodation early.
- It may be snowing so remember any gear you take up will have to be covered by tarps
- Our event worthy check area is under cover.
- There are cafes, restaurants and a pub in Dinner Plain and nearby Mt Hotham.
- Other services, activities in Dinner Plain include; Beauty parlour, massages, kids playground, skateboarding area
- There are EFTPOS machines in the village.
- There are medical facilities in town and a paramedic.
- Mobile phone service through Telstra is excellent in the village, CDMA elsewhere.
- Fuel is not available in the village. Please fill up at Bright or Omeo before you arrive. We will organise fuel stops at Omeo and Swifts Creek during the competition.
